Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen – Reboot In Production With Stranger Things’ David Harbour

News has just broken that Millennium Pictures (The Expendables, Conan the Barbarian) will be rebooting the beloved Hellboy franchise, with David Harbour (Stranger Things) replacing Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) as the infamous red-faced demon. The project is scheduled to start filming this year, under the working title: ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen‘.

Hellboy was the brainchild of writer/artist Mike Mignola. The character made his debut in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, back in August of 1993. Since his incarnation, Hellboy has appeared in hundreds of comic book issues, two straight-to-DVD animated movies, two video games (The Silence of Evil & Asylum Seeker), and most notably, two live-action movie adaptations in 2004 & 2008.

Although the movies didn’t see huge success at the box office (bringing in just 250 million USD between them), they have since formed a cult-like status on home video, with many people campaigning for a third and final instalment to the franchise.

Guillermo del Toro & Ron Perlman

Both Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro (the director of the two films) encouraged the campaign and seemed to be on-board with finishing the trilogy. However, after struggling to secure financing for the film, del Toro announced that the final instalment wouldn’t be happening – “Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it“.

Ron Perlman has stayed mostly quiet on how he feels about the reboot. However, he did take to Twitter, acknowledging the fans of his iteration of the character, saying “Gettin alotta twitter love 2nite. Feelin it. Diggin it. Much obliged, you, the faithful…

To which Guillermo del Toro responded with “I LOVE you too Perl“, linking back to Perlman’s original tweet.

Perlman finished the exchange, referring to del Toro his brother “Me too little brother. Together through life…

Although most Hellboy fans would have preferred to see a third instalment to the franchise over a reboot, they still have a plethora of reasons to be excited. Firstly, this new movie will be following the trend set by Deadpool and Logan, in that it will be R-Rated. This means that the movie will more closely resemble the comic’s adult themes and horror/gore elements, in a way that the del Toro movies couldn’t. Secondly, the movie is being directed by Neil Marshall, who famously directed two of the best Game of Thrones episodes to date – ‘Blackwater’ & ‘The Watchers on the Wall’. So we know that the project is in good hands!
